Gum Graft

Gum Graft at Beyond Dental and Implant Center, in Dallas, TXWhen you think of the perfect smile, what comes to mind? Many people tend to think that the only important feature of a beautiful smile is the condition of the teeth. While your teeth are an integral component, your gums also play an important role. In addition to playing a crucial role your smile, your gums are also important for oral health. When your gums recede, you are faced with not only aesthetic issues but oral health complications as well. At Beyond Dental and Implant Center, we can restore your smile and your oral health with a gum graft.

The Roles of Your Gums

Your gums are incredibly important. They help to provide you with a beautiful, confident smile. However, this is not their only role. The gums are also crucial for your oral health as well. Healthy gums provide a tight, protective seal around the necks of your teeth. This seal keeps bacteria and other debris from falling below the gum line, preventing them from attacking your periodontal ligaments and jawbone. They cover the sensitive roots of your teeth, preventing tooth sensitivity. They also play a role, in conjunction with your jawbone and periodontal ligaments, in keeping your teeth stable and in proper alignment.

What Leads to Gum Recession?

Gum recession is caused by several different issues. Common causes include
•  Periodontal disease.
•  Brushing your teeth too hard.
•  Poorly aligned teeth.
•  Bruxism.
•  Aging.

Restoring Your Smile and Oral Health

Gum recession can be treated with a gum graft. A gum graft is a surgical procedure that involves taking soft tissue from another location in your mouth, or from a donor, and transplanting it over your affected teeth. The procedure is done under a local anesthetic. Sedation is often provided as well to ensure your comfort. We begin by harvesting the tissue, which is typically taken from the roof of your mouth, and suturing it into place over the affected areas of your gums. As you heal from the procedure, your gums, and the donor tissue fuse together to form a natural, healthy seal around your teeth, effectively restoring your smile and your oral health.

Types of Gum Grafts

There are a few different types of gum grafts that may be used. During your initial consultation, we will go over these options and determine the best type of soft tissue grafting procedure to use.
•  Connective tissue grafts. A connective tissue graft uses tissue from the roof of your mouth. The tissue is harvested from underneath a small flap. It is commonly used to provide root coverage.
•  Free gingival grafts. A free gingival graft also uses tissue from the roof of your mouth. However, instead of taking the tissue out from under a small flap, the tissue is taken directly from your palate. While this leaves a larger, open wound, it is often preferred when keratinized tissue is required.
•  Pedicle grafts. A pedicle graft uses surrounding gum tissue rather than tissue from the roof of your mouth. With this type of graft, strategic incisions are made in your gums, and the tissue is rearranged to effectively cover the affected teeth. With this type of graft, your blood vessels are kept intact, which can aid in a speedier recovery.
