Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma at Beyond Dental and Implant Center, in Dallas, TXWhen your body is injured, it immediately goes to work healing itself. Your body works to stop the bleeding at the wound as well as regenerate new cells and tissues. This is the same whether you have sustained an injury as a result of an accident or you are undergoing a surgical procedure. After a surgical procedure, a major goal is to ensure that you heal quickly to avoid infections and other serious complications. At Beyond Dental and Implant Center, we can help to achieve this goal with platelet rich plasma.

What are Platelets?

Platelets are tiny cells that are found in your bloodstream. They are suspended in the plasma, the liquid portion of your blood, along with red and white blood cells as well as other cellular components. When you are injured, platelets are rushed to the wound. These cells are responsible for clot formation to stop bleeding. They also contain growth factors that aid in cell and tissue regeneration to help heal the injury.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, is a product that is used to help aid in wound healing following a surgical procedure. With this product, we can concentrate platelets and apply it to the surgical site following your procedure. This concentration of platelets, along with the platelets sent through your bloodstream, aids in expediting the healing process. One of the most incredible things about PRP is that it is made using a small sample of your very own blood.

Making Platelet Rich Plasma

The process for making PRP is a very quick, very simple procedure that is done here in our office right before your scheduled procedure. We only need to take a small sample of your blood. This sample is spun in a centrifuge that is located in our office. The centrifuge spins rapidly to separate red blood cells and plasma. When the centrifuge is finished spinning, we take the plasma portion of the sample and spin this portion a second time. With the second cycle, we concentrate the platelets.

Once your procedure is complete, and the wound has been sutured closed, the PRP is applied to the area in a thick layer. In addition to providing the surgical wound with additional platelets for faster healing, the PRP also functions as a natural bandage, sealing the surgical wound and protecting it from potential bacterial invasion.

How is Platelet Rich Plasma Used?

PRP has many different applications in dentistry. These uses include
•  Gum grafting.
•  Bone grafting, including ridge augmentation and sinus lift.
•  Fistula repair.
•  Bone repair.

The Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma

PRP is a simple procedure that provides several incredible benefits.
•  The process is convenient. We draw the sample of blood right before your procedure. There is no need for an additional appointment.
•  It is an affordable process. There are no costs for a hospital visit just to draw the blood and no lab fees for preparing the PRP.
•  PRP is completely safe. We use your blood, which means there is no risk for disease transmission or other complications that could arise using blood from a donor.
•  Healing is expedited following your procedure. In addition to the platelets your body sends to the surgical wounds, you also receive a concentrated dose of extra platelets, which aid in regenerating new cells and tissues much faster.
•  Your risk for infection is greatly reduced. Faster healing means that there is less risk for bacteria to get inside the surgical wound. Additionally, the PRP acts like a natural bandage, sealing out bacteria.

With platelet rich plasma, we can help speed up your recovery following dental procedures, which then helps to reduce your risk for infections and other issues. Call Beyond Dental and Implant Center at (972) 591-7520 today to learn more.
