Cleanings and Exams

Brushing and flossing are essential daily habits for maintaining the health of your mouth and preventing serious issues like cavities and gum disease. The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. While these habits are essential, even those who strictly follow the ADA guidelines can still be faced with oral health issues. To maintain the best possible oral health, the ADA also recommends twice yearly professional cleanings and exams. Beyond Dental and Implant Center can help.

Cleanings

The American Dental Association recommends that you have your teeth professionally cleaned every six months. Professional cleanings are designed to help remove all buildup from all surfaces of your teeth. We are even able to clean hard to reach areas that you may not be able to access at home fully. With cleanings, we can further help you prevent the development of oral health issues.

Your professional cleaning is a fairly straightforward process. We begin by scraping the surfaces of your teeth. With specialized tools, we can eliminate all buildup, including tartar, or calcified plaque, deposits that you cannot remove with your toothbrush. We pay close attention to the area around and just under your gumline, which helps to prevent irritation of your gum tissue.

After scraping your teeth, we polish them. Using an electric handpiece affixed with a rotating head and a dental polish, we clean the surfaces of your teeth. The polish contains abrasives that scrub your teeth as the head of the handpiece spins. With polishing, we further eliminate any debris, including surface stains, leaving you with a beautiful, clean smile.

Finally, we floss your teeth. Flossing not only helps to eliminate any build up between your teeth that you may have missed but also helps to get rid of any loose debris and polish that may have accumulated during your cleaning. If necessary, we can also provide you with a fluoride treatment.

Exams

The ADA also recommends biannual exams as well. These exams are typically performed in the same appointments as your cleanings. Exams are essential for the early detection of oral health issues. Most oral health issues do not exhibit any symptoms in their earliest stages. With early detection, we are then able to provide you with less invasive treatments to restore your oral health, preventing serious issues and the need for more invasive treatments later.

Much like cleanings, exams are a straightforward procedure. We begin by looking over the structures of your mouth. We check your teeth for signs of decay, cavities, chips, and cracks. Your gums are looked over for redness, swelling, recession, and other symptoms of gum disease. We also perform an oral cancer screening. This is a quick process that involves looking over your intraoral tissues for signs of any abnormalities.

Another important part of your dental exam is dental x-rays. X-rays, while not taken at every appointment, allow us to see the areas of your mouth that are otherwise hidden from view, including the spaces between your teeth and below your gumline. We can spot cavities, root damage, developing teeth, bone loss, abscesses, and more. With a complete picture of the condition of your mouth, we can help provide you with the most effective treatment possible to ensure optimal oral health.

Professional cleanings and exams further help you to prevent the development of oral health issues like cavities, gum disease, and more. For more information, and to schedule your next cleaning and exam, call Beyond Dental and Implant Center today at (972) 591-7520.
