Scaling and Root Planing
Oral hygiene is crucial for protecting the health of your mouth. The ADA recommends twice daily brushing and once daily flossing. In addition to your home care routine, it is also important to have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined. These habits are essential for optimal oral health. Ignoring any component can quickly lead to the development of periodontal disease. Should periodontal disease occur, Beyond Dental and Implant Center can provide treatment with scaling and root planing.
What Exactly is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease develops as a result of a bacterial infection in your mouth. Bacteria cause your sensitive gum tissue to become irritated, which triggers an inflammatory response from your immune system. This inflammatory response causes the tissue to swell. Without treatment, the swollen tissue begins to pull away from your teeth, leading to the formation of periodontal pockets. Bacteria fall into these pockets. They continue to attack your gums, causing the pockets to become deeper and deeper.
The longer periodontal disease goes untreated, the worse it becomes. Bacteria below the gums not only attack your soft tissue, but they also attack your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone. These supporting structures weaken over time, causing your teeth to become loose. Eventually, you could be faced with tooth loss and other serious complications.
Eliminating Periodontal Disease with Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a common treatment used for treating periodontal disease. This treatment is essentially a deep cleaning for your teeth that involves cleaning the visible surfaces of your teeth as well as root surfaces below the gum line. While the procedure is minimally invasive, your gums may be sensitive. To ensure your comfort, we perform the procedure under a local anesthetic.
Your treatment begins with scaling. This is the cleaning of the visible surfaces of your teeth. Using a tool called a scaler, we scrape the tooth surfaces, carefully cleaning them to ensure we eliminate all plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other debris. Once your visible tooth surfaces have been cleaned, we move on to root planing. This is the cleaning of the root surfaces of your teeth. Using specialized tools, we remove plaque, bacteria, and other toxins from the surfaces of your teeth below the gum line. We effectively smooth these surfaces, which makes it more difficult for new bacteria to accumulate. Finally, an antibacterial wash is administered to help kill any bacteria that might still be remaining below the gums. A follow up is scheduled for 6 to 8 weeks later to ensure that treatment is effective.
