J5 TENS Machine

J5 Myo monitor at Beyond Dental and Implant Center If you wake up morning after morning with a pain in your jaw and temporomandibular joints and are finding it increasingly difficult to do basic things like eat and speak, you may be suffering from a condition known as bruxism. Bruxism can significantly interfere with your quality of life, making the simplest movements of your mouth excruciating. At Beyond Dental and Implant Center, one of the ways we can help to treat bruxism, alleviating your discomfort, is with the J5 TENS machine.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a condition where your teeth clench together and grind against one another. When you have bruxism, the muscles that control your jaw tense, which forces the jaws to clench. Constant clenching and grinding wear out the muscles in your jaw. It can also lead to severe pain in the jaw and the temporomandibular joints. This pain can become so severe that you find it difficult to eat, speak, or even just move your mouth a little.

How Does Bruxism Happen?

There are several different issues that can lead to bruxism, including:
•  Stress. Stress causes the muscles in your body, including those in your face and jaw, to tense. While you are sleeping, you have no control over the tension as well as the subsequent clenching and grinding, which can lead to serious pain the mornings.
•  Lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking.
•  Certain types of medications.
•  Caffeine.
•  Alignment or bite issues. Even minor alignment or bite issues can cause bruxism.

Symptoms of Bruxism

Pain in your jaw and temporomandibular joints first thing every morning is one of the biggest indications of bruxism. There several other symptoms that may occur as well, including:
•  Facial pain and swelling.
•  Tired muscles in your jaw and face.
•  Difficulty eating, speaking or moving your mouth.
•  Excessive or uneven wear on your tooth enamel.
•  Gum recession.
•  Loose teeth.
•  Headaches or earaches.

The J5 TENS Machine

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It involves the use of electrodes that are attached to your skin. We use the J5 TENS machine. This machine has electrodes deliver low-frequency stimulation that stimulates nerves. This stimulation, which is administered in a specific sequence, cause the muscles to contract and relax. The stimulation provides a type of electrical massage that helps to work the tension out of the muscles and remove toxins. Alleviating the tension in your muscles allows them to relax, which then helps to alleviate the pain and other symptoms associated with bruxism.

Benefits of the J5 TENS Machine

The J5 TENS machine provides several incredible benefits, including:
•  Reducing pain. The TENS machine helps to relax the muscles in your jaw. With the muscles relaxed, the pain in your jaw and temporomandibular joints is alleviated. Reducing this tension can also help to alleviate associated headaches and earaches.
•  Treatment is safe. The TENS is a drug-free, surgery-free way to treat bruxism. There are some factors that can impact your ability to use this technology, including having a pacemaker, cancerous lesions, or if you are pregnant. We will go over your medical history to ensure this treatment is right for you.
•  Using a TENS machine also helps to stimulate the release of endorphins, which are how your body naturally alleviates pain. Endorphins also help to improve mood.
