Crown Lengthening

Your smile says a lot about you. A major component of your smile is your teeth. While your teeth do play a significant role in the quality of your smile, they are not the only one. Your gums also play a major part. Excess gum tissue can leave you with what is known as a gummy smile. When you have too much gum tissue, the quality of your smile may be significantly affected, even if your teeth are perfect. Beyond Dental and Implant Center can help you to achieve your ideal smile with a crown lengthening.

What is a Crown Lengthening?

With excess gum tissue, your otherwise perfect teeth can appear small, resembling baby teeth. This can significantly impact the quality of your smile. A crown lengthening is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to correct this issue. During this procedure, we remove the excess tissue, leaving you with an improved smile and boosted confidence.

How is a Crown Lengthening Performed?

A crown lengthening is performed using a dental laser. The laser uses a concentrated beam of light to effectively remove excess tissue, providing an alternative to a traditional scalpel. The laser is a thin beam of light that can be adjusted as needed to meet a variety of needs, including soft tissue and bone removal. The laser cauterizes as it cuts, limiting bleeding during treatment. It is also incredibly accurate. Not only are we able to target and remove only the necessary tissue, but the laser also helps to limit tissue trauma, which reduces pain and swelling, and your recovery time.

Crown lengthening is performed under a local anesthetic. We begin by making small incisions in your gums to separate the tissue from your teeth. We then use the laser to remove the excess tissue. If necessary, the laser is adjusted to remove small amounts of bone. Once your procedure is finished, your gums are sutured back against your teeth. The results of your treatment are noticeable right away.

What are the Functional Purposes of a Crown Lengthening?

While a crown lengthening is generally a cosmetic treatment, the procedure also has some functional applications as well. These applications include
•  Filling a cavity at the gum line. Cavities that form at the gum line may have caused decay below the tissue. This can present problems completely removing decay or filling the cavity. With a crown lengthening, we can provide thorough treatment for your cavity, restoring the health of the tooth and preventing further harm.
•  Placing a dental crown. A dental crown is a restoration that resembles a cap that sits over the entire visible surface of your tooth. If you have excess gum tissue obscuring a part of the tooth that should be visible, the crown may not fit properly. This can affect the success of the treatment. Removing excess tissue enables proper crown placement for the best results.
•  Improving periodontal health. Excess gum tissue can provide hiding places for bacteria. These areas can be difficult to clean properly. As a result, your risk for periodontal disease increases. Eliminating excess tissue can help to prevent bacterial buildup on your gums, which can help to protect your periodontal health and prevent serious complications.
